AGADIR / OUARZAZATE. ouarza-place After breakfast we set off towards the south-east across the Souss Valley, stopping in Taroudant for a coffee at the old Pachas Palace – now a hotel, and then via Tazenakht to the ‘Beau Geste’ city of Ouarzazate. Lunch is taken en route before arriving in this former Foreign Legion town for our dinner and overnight stay. BLD Day 3. OUARZAZATE/ DRÂA VALLEY / ZAGORA . draa-place After breakfast we set out on our journey through the Drâa Valley to the edge of the Sahara, Zagora. There is even a sign telling us the number of days by Camel to Timbuctou! We visit the Tamegroute Mosque where there is still a Koran written on strips of vellum, some of Alexander the Great’s maps and an original maths primer before spending the night in the desert Hamada town of Zagora, once an important stop for the caravanserai with their gold, salt and slaves. Dinner is in the hotel. BLD Day 4. ZAGORA / ALNIF / ERFOUD. erfoud-place After breakfast we set off north and then east, skirting the Sahara between the Jbels Sarhro (The Dry Mountain) and Beni to take lunch in the small village of Alnif. Such a contrast – the main form of transport here is donkey or pickup truck! On we go to the Taffilalet Oases, to arrive finally at Erfoud, another French Foreign Legion outpost. Dinner and overnight in your hotel in Erfoud. BLD (Here at either sunrise or sunset we can organise for you a trip by Land Rover to Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, the highest dunes in the Sahara, to witness a spectacular sunset or sunrise) Day 5 ERFOUD / TODRA GORGE / TINEGHIR. TINEGHIR-place After breakfast, we set off first to the north through the almost lunar landscape and then to the east alongside the High Atlas mountains to the Todra Gorges where lunch is taken in the shade of the cliffs. The night with dinner is spent in a hotel in Tineghir. BLD Day 6. TINEGHIR / DADES GORGES / ROAD OF 1000 KASBAHS / OUARZAZATE. DADES-GORGES-place After breakfast today we take the road of a Thousand Kasbahs back to Ouarzazate. Lunch is taken at the entrance to the impressive Dadès Gorges. On to Ouarzazate for dinner and overnight. BLD Day 7. OUARZAZATE / KASBAHS AND KSOURS / TAROUDANT. zagora-place After breakfast this morning we explore what is the ex French Foreign Legion town of Ouarzazate. We start with the Kasbah Taourirt, once the home of the all-powerful Glaoui family made famous by Gavin Maxwell in his book Lords of the Atlas. On to the Aït Ben Haddou Kasbah, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and backdrop to so many Hollywood films. We then take the road for Taliouine where lunch is served and on to Taroudant for dinner and overnight at the old Pachas Palace. Taroudant was an important crossroads for the caravanserai of gold, salt and slaves. We arrive in time to visit the Medina and souk before dinner. BLD Day 8. Dinner and hotel Day 05: Fes / Ziz Valley – Merzouga (Camel Ride & Night in Desert): We will pick you up from your riad / hotel then drive south to Ifrane and Azrou through the Middle Atlas mountains. On the way we will stop at the cedar forests to see the Barbarian Apes in their natural habitat. Travelling through the Tizi Ntalghamt pass to Midelt and along the magnificent Ziz Gorges carved through volcanic rock, you’ll see views of the Middle-Atlas plateau and the scenery changing to reveal hints of the desert as you approach the city of Errachidia. After lunch we’ll continue our journey through the Ziz Valley to Erfoud, Rissani and Merzouga. After a glass of mint tea, we’ll leave our luggage in a safe room then take a camel ride to a Berber camp in the middle of the Erg Chebbi Sad Dunes which are the highest sand dunes in North Africa. The camel trek takes about 1hr 30 min from to the camp where we will set up Berber tents for our night in the desert. The tents are well equipped with mattresses, blankets, and cushions. After dinner we will gather around the fire and enjoy the sound of traditional Berber drums under the stars. Day 6 : Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Tinghir – Todra Gorges – Dades – Ouarzazate: We will wake up early to enjoy a magnificent sunrise on the dunes then take a camel ride back to the hotel.
